Peru Analysis

With this is their first World Cup since 1982, Peru is one of those teams that could prove to be a big surprise.

TThey didn’t lose a single match since November 2016 (2:0 loss against Brasil), drawing 4 times and winning 9.
Team is characterized with excellent understanding between players both offensively and defensively. Friendlies are chosen cleverly, so they got to test themselves against various styles of play. The team spirit is even higher after Guerero is eligible to play.

  1. Peru is one of those teams that fire from all weapons. They are a threat from open play as well as from set-piece situations. They rarely concede, but they don’t have problems to find ways to hurt opponents. One of big threats for opponents will be their quick and direct style of play, imposed through fluid and dynamic movement. Finding Cueva and Carillo between the lines is one of key factors in attack. They are so good in driving the ball forward, and on small spaces. As soon as those two receive the ball, players start their runs in behind the defensive line. They aren’t that balanced defensively, but the speed and intensity to cover dangerous areas once opponents manage to penetrate is crucial in keeping them away from the box, so winning 1v1 duels across the field is going to be important against them. Defensive line is very synchronized, with Tapia providing big help at the back.
  2. When they press high front two aren’t followed, so players who receive the ball behind the first line of pressing have more time and space to consider their options.

They have issues in dealing with long balls into space between midfield and defensive line, as both centre-backs are drawn away by opponent’s run in behind so the receiver is free to receive.
