Nigeria Analysis

They are insecure in possession, as midfielders are often positioned very close to each other, which is why opponents had success in regaining possession on their own half of the field in central areas and launched quick counter-attacks (England especially).

TThey are a more counter-attacking oriented team that tends to use pace and directness of Victor Moses and Alex Iwobi.

  1. They defend in narrow 4-2-3-1 structure, with high positioning of wingers. Due to this wide areas are vulnerable and opponents managed to exploit it with third man runs to get the ball by the touchline. Full-backs push high out of position to close down wide areas, so there is possibility to get in behind them.
  2. Wingers were often late to track back, so Shehu and Idowu were frequently overloaded by opponents. Defending against crosses has been an issue for them recently, especially against cut-backs. They have conceded from set-pieces too, with this being one of really vulnerable aspects of their play.
