Germany Analysis

Germany enters the competition as the winner of World Cup 2014, and since then they made some changes to the squad and introduced new players that could give them another dimension going forward. The biggest change proved to be in the position of main striker.

WWith Werner up front they are more dynamic, as his runs in behind or out wide in transition proved to be quite a threat and upredictable for opponents. His link up play with Muller is excellent, as their off the ball movement complement each other.

  1. They develop attacks mostly around the left halfspace and down the left flank, with attacking midfielder dropping deeper and forwards playing quite close to each other. This allows Muller to move inside and play close to Werner. Opponents defend mostly in low block against Germany, but they managed to break them using the same pattern in all those matches.
  2. Centre-backs are comfortable in possession, and they frequently look to deliver long diagonal balls in behind the defensive line for either Reus or Draxler. They had problems to break opponents open in recent matches, as they won only once in last 6 matches (lost against Brazil and Austria).

Defensive problems were down to lack of awareness and appropriate support from Ozil, but it a question if he’ll play right from the start.
